Gissler - 2015 - Blog - New

The New York Design Center, aka 200 Lex, hosted their seventh annual What’s NEW What’s NEXT last week – a building-wide Open House to give the countless showrooms the opportunity to show new product. An enormously successful and well-attended event that I went to early in the day to get a sneak preview.

I found that for me What Is NEXT, is NOT always What Is NEW.  I selected specific products that spoke to me as both interesting and enduring…

Sandback Tables

Peter Sandback, who’s designs are available at Dennis Miller, has succeeded in creating a distinctive approach to decoration that looks like inlay – reminiscent of fine French Art Deco by Emile Jacques Ruhlmann, or shagreen surfaces by Jean Michel Frank – using small nails!

His patterns are often both friendly and fresh, and bely the method of making them; one might imagine the reductive and commanding presence of the magical sculptures made by his father Fred Sandback — with colored string inspired him to create his own form of magic – in this case alchemy.

Potterton Books

There is hardly a vintage bookstore that I do not like – so discovering a treasure trove at Potterton in their new home at 200 Lexington was a delight. I could have spent hours looking at the incredible collection of new and rare titles on Interior Design, Architecture, Gardens, Antiques and the Decorative Arts. It’s going to be a guilty pleasure spending a few minutes there everytime I’m in the building.

Aerin

The Charlton Wall Light and the Clemente Wall Light — two modern takes on a swing arm lamp recalling the French 1950’s designs of Serge Mouille.

Baker Furniture

Two pieces by Thomas Pheasant caught my eye: the Bel-Air Lounge Chair, billed as ‘A high-style variation on the 19th century gondola form’, is a fully upholstered slipper chair with a refined silhouette – graceful, with excellent proportions, and the Arcade Center Table – classic lines with a modern twist – an interpretation of a series of tables from the 1950’s designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb.

Crosby Street Studios

At Anthony Mott’s new outpost at 200 Lexington, I found two floor covering options I’m certain to use in a future project. Above left is ‘Josi’s Coll’ a brick red on ivory flat weave constructed of matte raw silk – the very dry appearance reads like an understated tribal weave Dhurrie, and fits perfectly with our aesthetic at GGD.

And above right is ‘Choroni’ a woven polypropylene area rug that’s designed for outdoor use, but that could easily be used in high-traffic areas of homes with little if any worries. I am always on the look-out for just such rugs, and this one is better than most I’ve seen in the marketplace.

Profiles

And finally at Profiles, one of my favorite light fixtures, the KN Bug Eye Bauble Chandelier, with cast glass lenses held together by metal fretwork and industrial washers and bolts. Modern, industrial and classical all in one. I’ve just installed a custom sized version in the powder room of an expansive West Village apartment — the quality of light is magical!
