In 1994 Chris Casson Madden asked me if she could photograph some of the bathrooms at the beachfront property I designed for Caroline Hirsch – there are 7-1/2 bathrooms in the house so she had a lot to choose from….

I worked directly with Chris and the incredible talented John Vaughan – who tragically died the following year – never seeing this book in print. Chris and John photographed four bathrooms; they all appeared in the book including the cover.

BATHROOMS was both a book of ‘inspiration’ and an offering of practical advice and resources; so the traditional shelter book avoidance of actually seeing toilets did not apply here.

The lower level of the three story house had a wonderful home gym that was a combination of state-of-the-art equipment and the romance and nostalgia of another era. This image is looking from the gym into the bathroom that has a very large steam shower for two or more people to steam together.

Although one would never look at this and think avante-garde, the use of a rain shower head here certainly pre-dated the incredible popularity of the 2000’s by more than a decade. The campaign chair upholstered in a high-contrast plaid was from George Smith. The floor and wall ceramic tiles from American Olean.

NOSTALGIC – Seaside Retreat

This bathroom was on the main floor of the house and was designed to serve the pool; evoking the look and feel of a vintage beach cabana with the beadboard wainscotting, shaker pegs, simple roller shade with cord with string cord and ring detail, vintage-style fixtures, even the painted wood hamper! The limestone was selected for its resemblance to the color of sand.

In the ladies bath three prints of swans by Joe Andoe hang over the large tub with a view onto the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The oversized built-in vanity provides lot of storage and counter space including a make-up area with an upholstered stool: two more windows with ocean views help flood the room with daylight. The antique rug lays on Carrera floors, and an upholstered chair brings additional richness and comfort to the room.

The Carrara stone counters were honed and sealed for a soft non-reflective appearance, complemented by a collection of sterling silver accessories.
