Glenn Gissler - New York Interior Designer

Glenn Gissler

President

Glenn Gissler is an award-winning, widely published New York interior designer known for elegant, livable environments and decorative arts expertise.

The hallmark of Glenn Gissler’s work is livability  – Glenn earned degrees in Architecture and Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design, and is known for creating sophisticated, thoughtful, personal, and very livable spaces, with a passion for incorporating art and antiques to create unique home environments.

While involving the client in every phase of planning, construction and furnishing, he and his team do everything they can to make the process as enjoyable and trouble-free as possible by paying close attention to issues of schedule, quality and the budget.

Glenn’s award-wining design work regularly appears in magazines, books and on-line venues. Projects have been featured in The New York Times, Town & Country, LUXE, NYC&G, Antiques & Fine Art, Maine Home + Design, Aspire, Elle Decor, InStyle, House & Garden, House Beautiful, Avenue, Interior Design, and ArchitecturalDigest.com. Recently a room he designed in the 1980’s was included in INTERIORS: The Greatest Rooms of the Century and Glenn was of the 100 designers included in Carl Dellatore’s book Interior Design Master Class for Rizzoli where he wrote about ‘Alchemy’ in interior design.

Gissler has served as an art advisor for many of his clients. He has placed works by Joan Mitchell, Larry Poons, Louise Bourgeois, Nancy Spero, Cy Twombly, Pablo Picasso, Brice Marden, Jacob Hashimoto, Donald Judd, Richard Tuttle, and many others.

In 1985, Gissler joined the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the United States’ oldest and largest professional association for interior designers. He served as President of the ASID New York Metro Chapter from 2016 to 2017. During his tenure, he partnered with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) to produce ASID NY-sponsored events during the four day show. In addition, he revamped DESIGN, the chapter’s quarterly magazine, and arranged for ASPIRE One Communications, Inc. to publish it.

From 2006 to 2016, Gissler sat on the Board of Governors of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, and has taken a strong lead in building the institution’s collection of 20th century design through donations of objects by influential designers including Ettore Sottsass, Russel Wright, Aldo Rossi, Christopher Dresser, and Raymond Loewy and artists including Donald Baechler, Joan Mitchell, and Donald Judd. Gissler has also been a visiting critic at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and the Parsons School of Design.

Even after decades of experience working in a variety of design styles Glenn remains a self-described “student of interior design”; always looking to expand and enrich his knowledge and to create enduring homes that encourage his clients to have a deep sense of satisfaction.

"I've known Glenn Gissler and his team for several years now, and have worked closely with Glenn on his contribution to my book, Interior Design Master Class, and with Craig on my book On Style: Inspiration and Advise from the New Generation of Interior Design. What stands out for me from our work together? Glenn and his senior designer Craig Strulovitz are consummate design professionals. They have an encyclopedic understanding of historical reference in design; they take a rigorously intellectual approach to design; and they have remain curious about what constitutes successful design in an ever changing world. Taken together, those ideas manifest in rooms that are both stylish and modern."

Carl Dellatore, Author

"Thanks to his architectural background, Glenn Gissler is a master at transformative spaces. His unique eye for materials, shape and color manifested in a seductive, sumptuous and luxurious space that has become our new home in Manhattan. Working with Glenn and his extended team of highly talented, professional and caring artisans and contractors yielded a formidable result we are extremely proud of."

Client

"Over the years Glenn has worked with us on two projects - a sprawling Upper East Side Co-Op and a Soho penthouse loft. They could not have represented two more different challenges, but each could not have been more successful. Glenn has impeccable taste - he was both sensitive to our needs and aesthetic and to the integrity of the space in which he worked."

Client

"You are FABULOUSLY talented."

– Nancy Novogrod, Former Editor in Chief of House & Garden and Travel & Leisure

"During a major renovation of our home 18 years ago, we were fortunate to engage Glenn Gissler Design from construction thru completion. What resulted was a spectacular family home - warm, inviting and most importantly, timeless. A home design that looks as beautiful in 2019 as it did 18 years ago. Glenn and his design professionals worked on all aspects of the job with a keen eye to sublime design and clean lines - all done in a professional and timely manner. I highly recommend Glenn Gissler Design and his entire team!"

 Client

"Glenn Gissler Design did a tremendous job transforming an imposing raw space in an historic building in the West Village into an architecturally beautiful home that is warm and comfortable. While the curved paneled staircase and muraled dining room give our home an “old world” sophistication, there is nothing stuffy or overdone about it. Instead, the thoughtful arrangement of furniture and the rich and multi-layered color palette make each and every room cozy and inviting. Our family will be happy in our home for many years to come!"
