At this year’s Salon Art + Design Show, Glenn had the pleasure of moderation a spirited discussion on “The Changing Contemporary Client”. The panel explored the buying habits of the new wave of collectors, who look to explore their personality and creativity with statement making, one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces for their homes.

Joining the panel was from left to right: Caleb Anderson of Drake/Anderson, Mia Jung of Ike Kligerman Barkley, Pierre Bonnefille of Atelier Pierre Bonnefille, Simon Stewart founder of Charles Burnand, and John Smiroldo founder of InCollect.

Melvin Dwork – An Honorable Man

blank

I don’t recall when I first saw the interior design work of Melvin Dwork, it might have been in the 1970’s in Architectural Digest; his work had a big impact on me. I remember it to be current with both minimalist and ‘high-tech’ sensibilities, but it also included select antiques (and even some color) to create spare yet rich environments that were ‘his alone‘. Time and time again I would be drawn to his work…

We’d like to say a word of thanks to Kendell Cronstrom and the team of judges for this year’s New York Cottages & Gardens Innovation in Design AwardsBernd Goeckler, Shawn Henderson, Sandra Nunnerley, Tara Seawright, and Alan Tanksley — for selecting Glenn Gissler Design as the winner in both the Kitchen Design and Interior Design categories at last evenings awards ceremony.

Among the many design luminaries present at the awards was none other than John Saladino, who received the Innovator Award, presented by Mark Sacco of Sacco Carpets for his incredible contributions to the interior design industry. It was a very special moment for me sharing the stage with such a design legend.

I was accompanied for the evenings festivities by Wendy Silverstein of WS&A Public Relations, and my Senior Designer Craig Strulovitz, who coincidentally celebrates his 10 year anniversary working at my firm this week. In many ways these prestigious awards are due in part to him – thank you Craig! — for your commitment to excellence in executing our work.

And once again thank you to everyone at NYC&G — being recognized by such an important shelter publications is certainly one of the highlights of my year!

Everyone seems to enjoy seeing ‘BEFORE and AFTER’ images of interiors – in this case the AFTER images are of Michael Kors and Lance Lepere’s apartment. (The BEFORE photos are from the previous owner – an Emmy Award winning television personality.)

BEFORE

Finding an apartment can be a daunting task for anyone, but having a vision, and VERY high standards can make the process all the more challenging!

Michael Kors and Lance Lepere looked at every apartment listing that held any promise over a very extended period of time, within a tightly defined geographic area, before finding this apartment.

As you can see in the ‘Before’ images, the place did not ‘show well’; however, Michael and Lance could see through the ‘rustic rural pastiche’ to see that the ‘bones’ could work for them – together we made it come to life.

Michael Kors was my first client. I had the pleasure of working with him on many projects large and small over a long period of time, however, this was a particularly meaningful project for me.  In addition to expressing the very specific point of view of a style leader, it was also to be a home for my long-time friend, and his partner.

It has been wonderful to witness Michael and Lance’s happiness together in this apartment.

A few years ago, when I was in the beginning stages of a design for a townhouse in Greenwich Village, the sales rep from Savel Inc. NYC showed us an outrageous rock crystal and bronze chandelier, made by Charles Spada; not necessarily thinking that we would purchase one, but just to share something really special. We flipped over it and soon thereafter our clients agreed to purchase it…
