#TBT – East Coast Rooms – 2000

It may be wishful thinking, however as an antidote to the Winter blues here’s an optimistic look back at images of a house designed for Summer enjoyment that might be a welcome respite for us all.

In 2000, author Anna Kasabian came out with her book East Coast Rooms: Contemporary Portfolios from 40 North American Interior Designers

Kasabian is a freelance writer, journalist and the author of 14 books. Her writings on interior design and architecture, art, food and cooking, luxury and historic real estate, garden design, home and garden preservation projects and New England have been published in regional and national magazines.

An antique English Art & Crafts table and vintage American lamp add a level of ‘architectural’ interest to this modest Entry Hall.

Sea Grass and linen slip-covers and unlined linen curtains on stained wood rods evoke easy breezy Summer days. The graphic silhouettes of an eclectic mix of antiques – Aesthetic Movement, English Arts & Crafts, French and American – balance the heavier fully-upholstered pieces in the room.

A pair of vintage steel chandeliers hang over the custom table, surrounded by a set of caned circle-back chairs with arms from Robert Lighton.

The iron bed and plaid cotton area rug recalls simple old-school summer houses. The shutters are applied to the wall beneath the windows to ‘correct’ their awkward shape and placement on the wall, while adding more visual cues reminiscent of days gone by.

Donald Judd – Double Take

.

A double take is an act of quickly looking at something that is surprising or unusual a second time after looking at it a moment earlier.

.

The RISD Museum often focuses attention on a single object in an exciting program they call ‘DOUBLE TAKE’ where two different art/design educators or curators offer different perspectives or ‘takes’ on a single object in the museum collection. I have seen a number of these dialogues, they are fantastic!

One the items being featured in a new series DOUBLE TAKE: COLOR is a chair that I gave to the Museum designed by Donald Judd

#TBT – Town & Country 2003

Caroline Hirsch is a woman with great personal style – a style that includes an enviable lifestyle. I have had the pleasure of creating two homes for her.

She takes meticulous care of her homes, so much so that I jest that with five minutes notice I could arrive with cameras, lights and a few flowers and start shooting photographs immediately.

Shelter magazines are in the business of creating seductive images of rooms we want to be in, and lifestyles we want to have.  I love to create images that seduce, but truth be told, not all homes are as beautiful, or as well-styled as we see in print.

I can however tell you, with great confidence, that more than a decade later this home looks as good now as it did then…

Everyone seems to enjoy seeing ‘BEFORE and AFTER’ images of interiors – in this case the AFTER images are of Michael Kors and Lance Lepere’s apartment. (The BEFORE photos are from the previous owner – an Emmy Award winning television personality.)

BEFORE

Finding an apartment can be a daunting task for anyone, but having a vision, and VERY high standards can make the process all the more challenging!

Michael Kors and Lance Lepere looked at every apartment listing that held any promise over a very extended period of time, within a tightly defined geographic area, before finding this apartment.

As you can see in the ‘Before’ images, the place did not ‘show well’; however, Michael and Lance could see through the ‘rustic rural pastiche’ to see that the ‘bones’ could work for them – together we made it come to life.

Michael Kors was my first client. I had the pleasure of working with him on many projects large and small over a long period of time, however, this was a particularly meaningful project for me.  In addition to expressing the very specific point of view of a style leader, it was also to be a home for my long-time friend, and his partner.

It has been wonderful to witness Michael and Lance’s happiness together in this apartment.

Behind the Scenes: Master Bedroom

Glenn Gissler - Blog - 2015 - Gross & Daley - Troob_19-640x427

The dramatic scale of the custom ‘Grandville solid teak four-post bed from Robert Lighton  truly commands this spacious Master Bedroom in a large Colonial Revival home located in Westchester County, New York.

The custom ‘Aspen’ bedside tables from Holly Hunt hold custom ‘Sophie’ lamps in a full gloss platinum finish with ‘Vellum’ paper shades from Christopher Spitzmiller.

The bedding is from Frette, with a custom decorative pillow made by Genesis Upholstery that features two antique textile fragments with metal threads applied to a silk ground, mounted onto a cotton velvet covered cushion with bronze cording.

The fabric for the curtains is a fully custom hand-embroidered linen from Ranjit Ahuja from ALT for Living, the curtains were made by Doreen Interiors.

In the left corner is a Boudin chair and ottoman made by Jonas – upholstered in a Holly Hunt/Great Plains fabric. The early 20th century Austrian table is from Fleur, and holds an antique Chinese bronze vessel made into a table lamp.

The antique Mahogany Parlor chair has a seat upholstered in a Mokum fabric ‘Focus’.

The Paris Chandelier is from Holly Hunt Studio.
