RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) had much to celebrate with the inauguration of its 17th President this past week. Under an enormous tent near the school’s campus, hundreds of faculty, staff, friends, parents, dignitaries and alumni joyously celebrated. I am grateful to have been there to join the celebration!

After an exhaustive two year global quest to find the next President of America’s oldest art & design school, the President of the Board of Trustees Michael Spalter and his search team found exactly what they were looking for in Providence; they hired truly one of their own – Rosanne Somerson…

What’s NEW What’s NEXT 2015

Gissler - 2015 - Blog - New

The New York Design Center, aka 200 Lex, hosted their seventh annual What’s NEW What’s NEXT last week – a building-wide Open House to give the countless showrooms the opportunity to show new product. An enormously successful and well-attended event that I went to early in the day to get a sneak preview.

I found that for me What Is NEXT, is NOT always What Is NEW.  I selected specific products that spoke to me as both interesting and enduring…

We’d like to say a word of thanks to Kendell Cronstrom and the team of judges for this year’s New York Cottages & Gardens Innovation in Design AwardsBernd Goeckler, Shawn Henderson, Sandra Nunnerley, Tara Seawright, and Alan Tanksley — for selecting Glenn Gissler Design as the winner in both the Kitchen Design and Interior Design categories at last evenings awards ceremony.

Among the many design luminaries present at the awards was none other than John Saladino, who received the Innovator Award, presented by Mark Sacco of Sacco Carpets for his incredible contributions to the interior design industry. It was a very special moment for me sharing the stage with such a design legend.

I was accompanied for the evenings festivities by Wendy Silverstein of WS&A Public Relations, and my Senior Designer Craig Strulovitz, who coincidentally celebrates his 10 year anniversary working at my firm this week. In many ways these prestigious awards are due in part to him – thank you Craig! — for your commitment to excellence in executing our work.

And once again thank you to everyone at NYC&G — being recognized by such an important shelter publications is certainly one of the highlights of my year!

Hiding in Plain Sight: Shelter Island

Gissler - 2015 - Blog - Shelter Island
Mention Shelter Island and many New Yorkers will nod their heads and say they have heard of it, but haven’t really been, but boy are they missing out!
About a two hour drive from the city to Greenport, Long Island followed by a short five minute ferry ride across the sound and Voila! — you’re in one of the most scenic location that seems to be lost in time, and you’ll wonder why didn’t you visit sooner.

Designer Barn Sale Post Script

Glenn Gissler - Blog - 2015 - image5-1024x995

With excellent weather (despite the reports!) the Designer Barn Sale Tom Luciano and I held at my sorta-new pretty-old house in Roxbury, Ct last weekend was a rousing success.
.
More than 250 people showed up to pursue the wide variety of furnishings we had artfully arranged (if I do say so myself!) in what is the largest barn on my property.
.
A steady stream of sophisticated shoppers were on hand – some who had received the email announcing the sale, and others who saw the designer signs announcing the Designer Barn Sale placed at a number of key locations in Roxbury.
.
Among the many locals who showed up were dozens of people who mentioned that they had been at the House Sale that happened just before I took possession of the house, and were kvelliing over the dramatic transformation of the property and the barn; they all loved the openness of the landscape and the extended view over the Roxbury Land Trust – Lilly Preserve – behind my property.
.
Some of the design notables in attendance were the artist Steven Miller, antiques aficionado Craig Van Den Bruelle, Dale Cohen, PR Maven Wendy Silverstein, dealers Richard Lambertson & Suzanne Cassano, Rhonda Eleish, ASPIRE magazine’s Amy Sneider, Alexandra Carlin from the Hearst Corporation, and my clients Mariella and Brian Winthrop.
.
Here are a few shots of the offerings from early Saturday morning just as folks began arriving.

On behalf of Tom and myself I’d like to say a special word of thanks to everyone — old friends, and some new ones — who came by the sale. And whatever your plans are for these last 2 weekends of the summer season, enjoy yourselves!
