Nest Magazine was an outlier in the magazine world with a brief but impactful life from 1997-2003.

Joseph Holtzman, founder, and editor-in-chief created an outrageously unique and provocative experience for readers, exploring and revealing every kind of dwelling, from the professionally designed and grand to the humble yet beautiful.

In the video below, shot at the NYSID lecture I organized “Nest – A Wild Adventure”, Lisa Zeiger, former decorative arts editor at Nest, presents a lecture that explores Nest as a magnificently unified work of art reflecting the taste of its founder, and offers a rare glimpse into the magazine’s photography, graphic design, and eclectic array of authors and interiors.

The lecture was followed by a discussion with Mitchell Owens, decorative arts editor at Architectural Digest, and myself in my capacity as president of ASID New York Metro, on the magazine’s creators, exuberant content and its influence on design thinking and writing today.

Creative Collaborations: Designing Signature Product Lines

As some in the design community already know, I’ve been the President elect of the New York Metro Chapter of ASID since October of last year. I’ll become the President later this year in October.

But in the interest of raising the bar on activities within the organization I’ve been working with New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) President, David Sprouls, and his fantastic staff on a lecture series presented at the school. The latest event was held last Wednesday evening, and was titled ‘Creative Collaborations: Designing Signature Product Lines’.

The panel included 3 accomplished interior designers — Barry Goralnick, Alexa Hampton, and Laura Kirar — all of whom have been developing products for a variety of home ‘furnishing categories’ and a variety of manufacturers for years. Also on the panel was Kate Verner who is a creative strategist, brand manager and business expert in the luxury home industry.

I had the great pleasure of moderating the event. It was very fun and, at some moments, quite funny — and was very well attended both by students of the school as well as many members of the design community.

Donald Kaufman on the Art and Science of Color, at the New York School of Interior Design

Last week my long time friend and sometime collaborator Donald Kaufman shared some of his knowledge about light, color, and materials to a nearly full house at the New York School of Interior Design.

To set the tone for the evening’s discussion, Donald showed this legendary film clip from the 1948 movie Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, in which Mrs. Blandings (Myrna Loy) describes in ephemeral terms the ‘exact’ paint colors she was looking for in her Connecticut home.
